English as a Second Language

ESL Classes are offered at the main EGACE campus on Gerber Road and in several other locations in the community.

Main Campus- 8401-B Gerber Road, Sacramento

Students interested in ESL classes at our main campus on Gerber Road should complete EGACE’s online orientation and registration.  To register, click on the link to the left of this page.   Students will receive a date via email to attend an assessment session and to register for available classes.

ESL classes at Gerber Road are offered at five different levels. Students are tested to determine their level of English.

-Beginning classes are for students with little or no English. Students learn the basic forms and vocabulary of English needed in everyday situations.

-Beginning High classes are for students who already know everyday English words and phrases. Students learn to communicate their basic needs in spoken and written English. They learn to read simplified materials and to take part in simple conversations.

-Intermediate Low classes are for students who know the English necessary for everyday situations. Students expand their English skills and learn to communicate in new or unfamiliar situations.

-Intermediate High classes are for students who can use English to communicate in familiar and routine situations. Students learn more about the correct forms of written and spoken English and increase their ability to act independently in most situations.

-Advanced classes are for students who can communicate effectively in most situations.   The goal is to prepare students to exit the ESL program and transition to courses designed for native speakers of English. Emphasis is on developing the skills necessary to meet the student’s social, academic, and vocational demands with confidence.
